Spike Williams is focused on four primary issues that he believes are of paramount importance to the future of Fairfax County.
Luxury affordable housing defies the spirit of lending a hand up and is a slap in the face of Fairfax County taxpayers, many of whom own rental properties and are forced to pay into a system that competes against their own interests. The proceeds from the sale of many of the 3,624 county subsidized units could be directed to projects addressing transportation infrastructure needs.
The budget has increased at nearly five times the rate of population growth over the past ten years, this needs to be stopped and we must prioritize the efficient use of our tax dollars which will lead to reducing the cost to county residents, a cost that has doubled over the same period under the current leadership.
Transparency and accountability are still not part of the equation when it comes to spending on public education in Fairfax County. In order to properly direct dollars to the classrooms an independent audit is required of the $2.2 Billion FCPS budget. By doing this our children will get a better education and teachers will be appreciated and compensated commensurate to their integral role.
Phase II of the Dulles Rail Project must not be allowed to require that bidders for the project conform to Union standards, adding an additional 15 – 30% to the cost of the already inflated $3.5 Billion project. Virginia’s Right to Work laws have been instrumental in our success; we must guard against encroachment on them. I will also stand strongly against allowing further increases of toll fees in the Dulles corridor.
